giác hơi

I’ve been feeling a bit under the weather lately. A low-grade cold, caused no doubt by a bad wind. Definitely time for a giác hơi. Chị Sương swabs glass cups with an alcohol torch, and quickly places them on my back. The vacuum created when the air inside the cup cools sucks up my skin deep into the cups.

It leaves a hell of a mark. There have been many cases when Vietnamese families in America have nearly been sent to jail for child abuse.

I’ve been developing a ergonomic recumbent workspace for myself. I think I still have a ways to go.

sok kwu wan nights

sampan

We had a great evening last night. Trinh and I walked to Sok Kwu Wan around sunset. It’s a fairly strenuous hour-and-a-half walk. By time we got to the restaurant, we were ready to stuff ourselves with fried fish, salt-and-pepper shrimp, ginger crab and fried rice. But we were certainly not in any shape to walk an hour and half back home. We asked around, and hired a sampan to take us back home. No sampans are based in Lamma, so we had to order the boat from Aberdeen. The guy in the restaurant said that he’s seen people hire a sampan to Yung Shue Wan about twice a year. The ride back home – in the full moon, watching fireworks in Kowloon – was well worth the HK $160 we paid.

cao gio

I’ve been literally working myself sick over the last couple of weeks. I finally came down with a nasty cold a couple of days ago. I left the printing of John & Yoko in the capable hands of Finz and returned home for the evening. Trinh did a cao gio on my back. I’m feeling better already.
