Zoe has been enjoying her first Mother’s Day, wishing Trinh a very happy day this morning.

We quickly escaped the heat with a trip up to Dalat with Di Vân, Clifton and Joy. Our favorite spot there was Thung Lũng Vàng, a sprawling botanical garden run by the water company.

I especially enjoyed the orchid garden at Golden Valley.
We stopped by Power Station Beach so Trinh could collect some rocks to bring home. I think she’s been spending too much time with Terran.
Zoe took her first ever photograph today. She kept pointing the camera in different directions, so Trinh and I had to keep moving to try to keep in the frame.
Trinh made a big batch of Bún bò Huế this morning for five people. Then I made barbecue for six people this evening. Plus three kids. Now we’ve got to clean up the house.
Kraig was our second visitor, arriving in Hong Kong the day after Alan left. We finally got a good family portrait when Kraig took this shot with his new camera.
Here’s Trinh on New Year’s morning. I brought back the decorations from my last trip to China. The hand-calligraphed chun lian (a special new year’s duilan) on the sides of and above the door offers good luck wishes for the family and home. The fortune gods on the door (Cai Shen on the left and some other dude on the right) protect the home from intruders, supernatural and otherwise. The kumquat trees ensure prosperity through the new year. All the red (along with firecrackers at midnight new year’s eve) chase away the Nian who would otherwise come down from the mountains and eat us all up.
We all made it safely to Hong Kong on Monday morning. Zoe handled her first airplane ride very well ,but both mother and daughter are still quite tired. Here, Zoe is wearing her new flying saucer suit, a gift from Felicity.
We are out of the hospital and back at Di Van’s house. Trinh’s family is very traditional, so she and Zoe must stay in seclusion for a month. Trinh has many dietary restrictions during this time. No fresh fruit or vegetables, and nothing sour. All those are too Yin and she needs Yang. No beef or shellfish, which may provoke allergic skin reactions. Lots of salt and pepper to encourage drinking plenty of water for plenty of breast milk.
Zoe Allegra Potkin made her first appearance at 10:15 AM on 20 November 2007 at the FV Hospital. She started off 2.76 kg and 49 cm in length.
